Curriculum

The teachers of Learn & Play Preschool and Preschool Partners use two different curricula to help plan their daily lessons.  The Preschool goals are aligned with District 16's learning goals for kindergarten students.

All of the elementary schools in Spring Lake Park School District teach from a Houghton-Mifflin reading curriculum.  Below is an overview of each curriculum that Preschool uses.

Houghton Mifflin PRE-K
Houghton Mifflin PRE-K is a hands-on, minds-on curriculum that is based on scientific research.  Aligned with key Pre-K learning goals, it provides children with foundational skills they need to succeed as lifelong learners.  Houghton Mifflin PRE-K incorporates literacy, math, science, social studies, the arts, social/emotional development, and physical development into its curriculum.  Structured yet flexible instructional plans let the teachers adapt activities to both their teaching style and their children's needs.  Weekly literacy activities include:

  • Oral Language and Vocabulary
  • Listening Comprehension
  • Phonological Awareness
  • Read Alouds
  • Big Books with Content Links
  • Alphabet Instruction
  • Writing
Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum
Second Step is designed to promote social competence and reduce social and emotional problems by teaching children skills in the core areas of empathy, emotion management (impulse control, emotion regulation,

anger management), and social problem solving.  Children learn to recognize people and respect people with different backgrounds, perspectives, and ethnicities.  These essential life skills will help students in the classroom, on the playground, and at home.
