What is Independent Study? Independent Study is designed for students who are self-motivated and able to stay on task in the classroom. You need to be able to work well on your own both in class and at home. You will need to be able to conduct research, read on your own and write papers, completing your assignments in a timely manner. Staff members are available to guide your learning process, help you find resources, discuss topics related to your course work and answer questions as needed. The bulk of your work will be done on your own. You will need to be able to follow the program expectations on your own. This program is for those students who are serious about learning. What Independent Study Isn’t. Independent Study is not a tutoring program. Staff will be available to assist you but will not be “teaching a class”. It is not a place to sleep, hangout, visit with friends or waste your time. Independent Study is not a study hall. Students who are not showing steady progress or who are consistently unable to meet the behavioral and academic expectations of the program will have demonstrated that Independent Study is not for them. Our school guidance counselor is available for the student if needed to assist in finding a program for the student that is a better fit. How long will it take me to complete a credit? There are a lot of myths out there about this question. The length of time it will take you to complete a credit depends on many things, mostly related to individual abilities and work habits. In general, full time IS students that only attend this school will complete three trimester credits per term. Part time students who are coming after school and night school generally complete one trimester credit per term. |
