The Lighthouse Program

Understandings

The mission of the "Lighthouse Program" is to provide an educational experience that would match the needs of the insatiable learner. Implicit in most young students is this drive to make meaning of their world. Their questions unfold with curiosity. They have an insatiable need to seek answers to their questions. Answers they receive give birth to more questions. These students are driven to understand. They gain expertise in a wide spectrum of disciplines.

The Lighthouse Program described would engage and challenge these students. Responding to this curiosity results in improved pupil learning. Experiencing learning in a trust-filled environment focused on meaningful/relevant new understandings translates into student success. Consistent opportunities to experience success translate into high levels of student performance.

There is evidence to support the argument that we lose our best students in the "bright flight". This phenomenon draws our best students out of Minnesota for undergraduate and advanced degrees, as well as, later employment. We believe by offering a rich, complex and challenging program in grades 2-12, connected with higher education in the state and intensive internship/mentorships within the business community, we will develop those relationships that nurture a loyalty and commitment to Minnesota.
