Choosing 'Just Right' Books Ideas about books to read come from many sources: friends, teachers, family, library media specialists and the library catalog. All are good ways to get ideas for books. No matter how you get suggestions for reading, the key is for each of you to lean to choose the right book for you.
There are two categories of decisions to make when you are choosing a book:
- Does the book interest you? You can tell by examining the external features of the book such as the cover, blurb, illustrations and number of pages.
- Can you read the book? You can tell this by reading a bit of the book and performing the five-finger test.
Five Finger TestTest your book. Read one page. Put up a finger for each word you don't know. Then read below. 1 finger - Easy to read. Have fun! 2 fingers - Just right. Enjoy! 3 fingers - Challenging, but try it. You may need some help. 4 fingers - Very challenging. Read with a partner. 5 fingers - Too hard. Save it for later or have someone read it to you.
